My summer internship with the Fund has been everything but boring. This smorgasbord of an experience has allowed me to sample aspects of the kind of work in which I am most interested.
On the communications side, I learned to manage our Facebook and Twitter accounts, and had the chance to create a new Instagram account. Follow us! Have you checked out our spruced-up LinkedIn page yet? In addition, I gained experience writing blogs, newsletter articles, and assisted with grant reports. I also designed surveys and worksheets for our members.
One of my favorite projects of the summer was creating short videos illustrating the job access challenge in Northeast Ohio. This project gave me creative freedom while concurrently testing my problem-solving skills to figure out how residents living in different parts of the region who don’t have access to a car get to work using public transportation. Long, complicated commutes are a difficult reality for so many of our residents, and I hope to continue to be able to shed light on this issue.
Did you meet the summer research intern? Oh, that’s me! I had the opportunity to also assist the Fund with several research assignments, updating the neighborhood profiles on our website, researching job access data for Akron and Canton, and creating graphs that depict racial disparities in Cleveland, Akron, Canton, and Youngstown.
Attending meetings with members and other community leaders was a rewarding experience in and of itself. The opportunity to learn alongside leaders of foundations, corporations, universities, civic associations, and government entities is an opportunity not available elsewhere.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to this incredible internship.
