During his 11th State of the Schools address, Akron Public Schools Superintendent David James focused on the district’s connections to the community.
James began his speech at The Tangier by addressing his decision in late 2017 to apply for the superintendent position at Columbus City Schools.
“Though tempted to go elsewhere, something inside me did not sit right,” he said. “I decided to stay, and it became clear that this has been the right decision.”
James went on to emphasize the school district’s tag line, “Connecting Community to the Classroom.”
“Your volunteerism, mentorship, experiential learning opportunities, financial contributions and partnerships provide our students with meaningful relationships and support,” he said, adding that the number of community connections is in the hundreds.
One of the most visible community partnerships on display Thursday was the “Essential Experiences” program funded by a $1.2 million investment by the GAR Foundation.
