Personal View: Emerging Leaders are Shaping Akron’s Future

It has been both interesting and exciting to watch as an important conversation unfolds in Northeast Ohio regarding the economic development ecosystem and who will lead the efforts to design solutions to the challenges facing the region. Most notable among these challenges are those outlined in the Fund for our Economic Future’s “The Two Tomorrows” report. I applaud the many leaders who have courageously carried its message forward in public forums and have been privileged to participate in conversations across multiple organizations regarding these realities. I am optimistic regarding the emerging strategies for how Akron will respond.


Through this conversation, other regional challenges have also emerged. In a Personal View article recently published by Crain’s Cleveland Business, the issue of attracting and retaining young talent was raised, and with it, the need to include emerging leaders when crafting a strategic response.


I agree that emerging leaders are vital to a strategy of attracting and retaining young talent, but I also believe it would be short-sighted to stop there. The findings of the “The Two Tomorrows” report are concerning enough to warrant an all-hands-on-deck approach, and that includes emerging leaders. Thankfully, in Akron, we have the right landscape for these leaders to contribute to solutions across a broad spectrum of economic and community issues.
