Personal View: To Build an Inclusive Economic Summit, Invite the Community

In her Nov. 26 column, Crain’s editor Elizabeth McIntyre pointed out the lack of gender diversity in the group of 15 business and nonprofit leaders who announced earlier this month that they would be holding a two-day meeting in December to organize a 2019 regional economic summit.


But if we want this project to be successful, we also need to expand the conversation to talk about economic diversity.


Meaningful inclusion is critical to the work this group hopes to accomplish. The group itself has espoused its desire to “incorporate the perspectives, intelligence and experience of a cross-section of area residents to achieve our goals.”
